The Yellow Catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) is a large Southeast Asian bagrid catfish native to major river systems including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Xe Bangfai basins, as well as the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. In the wild it gravitates toward expansive, slow-moving rivers with soft, muddy substrates, and during seasonal floods it moves into inundated forest areas to spawn. It's a committed carnivore, taking insects, aquatic larvae, shrimps, crustaceans, and fish. In the aquarium this species is a serious commitment. It grows to well over a foot and a half, lives upwards of a decade, and carries an aggressive, territorial temperament that makes it incompatible with virtually any tankmate outside of the most extraordinary setups. One particularly notable trait is its apparent indifference to human presence, which means routine tank maintenance carries a real risk of being on the receiving end of an attack. This is emphatically not a community fish, and it should be kept as a solitary specimen. The enormous water volume required, combined with its aggression and long lifespan, puts it firmly outside the realm of practical home aquarium keeping for almost anyone. It does appear in the ornamental trade with some regularity, but that availability should not be mistaken for suitability.
