The blacktail catfish (Hemibagrus wyckii) is a large and genuinely dangerous predator from the fast-moving rivers of Thailand, Indonesia, and surrounding regions, where it occupies the middle stretches of major waterways over muddy substrates. It feeds on fish, invertebrates, and insects in the wild, and that predatory drive carries directly into captivity. Adults are heavily built with a broad, flattened head, a noticeably ossified dorsal spine, and pale cream coloring on the caudal fin rays and shoulder region. Useful identifiers that separate it from close relatives like H. wyckioides, which sports a reddish tail. The common name references the tail, while another nickname nods to the notably blue eyes, though that feature is not formally diagnostic. What sets this species apart behaviorally is its extreme aggression combined with an apparent fearlessness toward humans. Keepers performing tank maintenance have been attacked, which is unusual among freshwater fish. It is incompatible with tankmates in virtually any home aquarium setting. Despite sometimes appearing in the trade as juveniles, purchasing one is strongly discouraged. The combination of potential size exceeding two and a half feet, intense territoriality, and a lifespan that can stretch across decades makes this a species that belongs in specialist or public aquarium hands only.
