The African jewelfish (Hemichromis letourneuxi) is a compact cichlid from a surprisingly broad stretch of northern and western Africa, ranging from the Nile basin across to Senegal and down toward the Ivory Coast. In the wild it occupies savannah-associated wetlands, flooded plains, large lakes, and brackish coastal lagoons, and shows a remarkable tolerance for variable water conditions. Adults tend to hover near vegetation edges, where they hunt small crustaceans and insects. That adaptability is part of what makes this fish so resilient in captivity, but it comes paired with a personality that demands respect. Jewel fish are genuinely territorial, and that intensity only ramps up when a pair forms a bond and decides to spawn. They are substrate spawners, and a breeding pair in the mood will rearrange your aquascape and challenge anything that wanders too close. For that reason, tankmate selection matters. Robust, similarly sized fish that can hold their own are a much better fit than peaceful community species. A 55-gallon minimum gives a pair room to establish territories without constant warfare. If you go in with realistic expectations about the aggression, this is a rewarding intermediate-level cichlid with real personality and a lifespan that can stretch toward a decade.
