The Cupid Cichlid (Biotodoma cupido) is a compact South American cichlid found across a wide range that includes the Amazon basin in Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, as well as the Essequibo River system in Guyana. It carries a subtle but appealing look. A laterally compressed body marked by a dark blotch above the upper lateral line toward the rear flank, along with the greenish iridescent streaking that gives it its alternative trade name of green-streaked eartheater. Despite the aggressive and territorial tags that follow cichlids around, this species is genuinely peaceful outside of spawning situations and poses no real threat to tankmates it cannot swallow whole. The key to keeping it well is numbers: a group of five to eight individuals is the sensible starting point. Kept in smaller numbers, weaker fish tend to absorb disproportionate attention from dominant individuals, and the group as a whole often becomes skittish and unsettled. A proper group will establish a natural dominance hierarchy that is genuinely interesting to watch. This is a biparental substrate spawner with an unusual reproductive style. Females lead courtship, initiate pit-digging, and deposit a full egg batch before allowing the male a single fertilization pass. Both parents invest heavily in guarding fry for several weeks. An intermediate-level species overall, best suited to a keeper with some cichlid experience.
