Horadandia

Horadandia (Horadandia atukorali) is a miniaturised cyprinid from Sri Lanka, where it inhabits slow or still waters. Swamps, rice paddies, weedy coastal ponds and even mangrove channels with reduced salinity. It belongs to an exclusive club of cyprinids that evolved true miniaturisation, meaning sexually mature adults remain under 20 mm. Unlike some miniaturised relatives whose development is truncated into a larval-like form, Horadandia is essentially a proportionally scaled-down version of a typical danionine. Slender, laterally compressed and lacking barbels or a visible lateral line. In the aquarium it is completely peaceful, but its diminutive size and cautious temperament mean a general community tank rarely suits it well. It thrives alongside other small, gentle species, pygmy rasboras, Microdevario, Otocinclus, small Betta species and dwarf anabantoids, and can share a well-planted setup with Caridina or Neocaridina shrimp without issue. Keeping a group of at least ten to twelve individuals is important: larger numbers reduce skittishness and encourage males to display their best colour as they compete for female attention. Breeding is achievable for an attentive keeper; adults scatter mildly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, and small numbers of fry may appear in a mature planted tank with no special intervention at all.
