Pygmy Rasbora

The dwarf-spotted rasbora (Boraras maculatus) is one of the smallest cyprinids on the planet, barely reaching an inch even when fully grown, and it packs a lot of personality into that tiny frame. It comes from the slow, tea-dark forest streams and peat swamps of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, where the water is soft, acidic, and filtered through layers of leaf litter and decaying vegetation. In the aquarium, you'll see a slim, reddish-orange fish marked with a series of dark lateral spots, giving it a quietly ornate look that reveals itself best when you have a proper group together. And that's the key point with this species: eight to ten fish at minimum, ideally more. In decent numbers, the males display their richest color and engage in lively rivalry for female attention, turning a quiet planted tank into something genuinely interesting to watch. Despite being peaceful, the dwarf-spotted rasbora is not really cut out for a typical community setup. Its small size and somewhat timid nature mean it gets easily overwhelmed by larger or boisterous tankmates. It does best alongside other miniature species, think pygmy corydoras, small loaches, Otocinclus, or similarly gentle anabantoids, and can be kept safely with Caridina or Neocaridina shrimp. Breeding is possible in a well-planted tank but tends to go more smoothly with some effort from the keeper.
