Found in the swift mainstream of the Congo River and the lower Kasai, Lamprologus congoensis is a compact cichlid built for life in fast-moving water. The body is noticeably streamlined, the pectoral fins are powerful, and the swimbladder is reduced in size. All adaptations that help the fish hold position against strong currents. In the aquarium, these traits produce a fish that stays close to the bottom and moves in a distinctive, almost comical hopping motion that sets it apart from most cichlids. It resembles the popular Steatocranus species in both shape and personality, which is a useful frame of reference for anyone considering it. Temperament-wise, this is a genuinely aggressive and territorial fish. Males are hostile toward other males of the same species, and it should not be housed with other cichlids at all. That said, it mixes reasonably well with rheophilic Synodontis catfish, Alestiid tetras, larger characins and barbs, and similar tankmates that can handle its disposition, provided there is plenty of space and cover. Breeding follows a harem-based cave-spawning system. One male with several females, each claiming her own cave. The female broods the eggs and guards the fry while the male defends the broader territory. Despite its aggression, the species is considered manageable even for less experienced cichlid keepers.
