The Malawi Golden Cichlid (Melanochromis auratus) is one of the most recognizable mbuna from Lake Malawi, where it lives among rocky shorelines, grazing algae and biofilm from the surfaces of stones. Males wear a dark body overlaid with vivid horizontal banding, while females and juveniles display a golden-yellow coloration with black and white stripes. A reversal of the typical pattern seen in many cichlids. One curious detail: stressed males can temporarily revert to that golden female coloration, and older females sometimes darken until they look superficially like males. This species sits near the top of the mbuna aggression scale, and that reputation is well earned. It is notoriously intolerant of its own kind, particularly toward other males. Keeping more than one male together almost always ends badly for the subordinate fish. Even females can be rough on each other, which sets this species apart from many of its relatives. A harem arrangement with one male and several females works best, in a large tank with heavy decor to break lines of sight. Mixing with other mbuna is possible, but tankmates should not resemble M. auratus in color pattern, and peaceful species like Peacocks have no place in this setup. Avoid keeping it with other Melanochromis species due to hybridization risk. This is an intermediate-level fish at minimum, and not a forgiving choice for someone still learning the ropes of cichlid keeping.
