Greshakei

Found only at Makokola along the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, this cichlid, Maylandia greshakei, is a classic mbuna with a narrow natural range but a big personality. In the wild it inhabits rocky reef zones where a fine layer of sediment coats the rocks, and males graze the biofilm there while females filter phytoplankton from open water. The species has bounced through several genus names over the years, Pseudotropheus and Metriaclima among them, and you may still see it sold under either. An albino form also turns up in the hobby from time to time. In the aquarium, greshakei is not a fish you can drop into a peaceful community. It is genuinely aggressive, especially toward individuals that share its shape or coloration, and males will hammer on conspecifics relentlessly. The standard mbuna strategy applies here: keep the tank deliberately overcrowded, use a lot of rockwork to break sightlines, and maintain several females per male to spread the pressure around. Mixing it with other mbuna species rather than peacocks or utaka is a much better fit. It is a maternal mouthbrooder and can be bred in captivity without too much difficulty, making it a reasonable step up for a cichlid keeper ready to move past the beginner stage.
