The Indo-Pacific tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides) is one of those fish that immediately signals it belongs to an ancient lineage. Broadly distributed from the Red Sea and the east coast of southern Africa all the way across to the Society Islands, it occupies a remarkable range of habitats depending on its life stage. Adults are typically ocean-going, while juveniles push into estuaries, mangrove systems, river mouths, and even shallow swampy backwaters far inland. One of its most distinctive traits is obligate air-breathing. It surfaces regularly to gulp air, which means you will absolutely need open surface access in any setup housing this species. Young fish have an eerie, ribbon-like transparency that is reminiscent of eel larvae, though the forked tail gives them away. In the wild they feed primarily on smaller fish and crustaceans, so a meaty diet is essential in captivity. Given that adults routinely reach three to five feet in length, the aquarium requirements are substantial, and this is genuinely a species for dedicated keepers with serious infrastructure. It is a popular gamefish across much of its range, and its tolerance for widely varying salinity and water conditions points to a resilient constitution. But sheer size makes it a niche choice for home aquariums.
