Pore coral (Montipora flabellata) is one of those species that makes you do a double-take in a well-lit reef tank. Its colonies grow as encrusting sheets with irregular lobes, spreading across rockwork in a way that fills in gaps beautifully over time. The surface is densely covered in tiny papillae, small raised bumps that sometimes merge into low ridges, giving the colony a textured, almost velvety look up close. Corallites are very small, just half a millimeter across, and the septa are poorly developed, which is fairly typical for the genus. The coloration is where things get interesting: the most sought-after forms are a genuine blue, though this shade has a habit of photographing as pink or purple depending on the light spectrum you're shooting under. Brown and purple morphs also exist in the wild. In nature, this coral occupies shallow reef zones across a scattered range that includes Hawaii, Mozambique, and the broader Indo-Pacific. In the aquarium, it demands serious commitment. Very high light levels and strong, consistent flow are non-negotiable, and it's best suited to reefers who already have a stable, mature system dialed in. A forgiving beginner coral it is not, but in the right hands it rewards patience with a genuinely distinctive colony.
