This means anyone keeping juveniles needs to plan ahead for that salinity shift over time. Like all members of the Takifugu genus, this species is extremely toxic to consume due to tetrodotoxin concentrated in its tissues, which is worth knowing even if it has no practical bearing on keeping one in your tank. What surprises many people is the temperament. This puffer is considered peaceful compared to most of its toothy relatives, which opens up more options for tankmates than you'd typically expect from the group. It has a modest adult size and a reasonably long lifespan for a fish of its kind.
