Found in the fast-moving mountain streams of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Bhutan, Danio dangila is actually a taxonomic curiosity. It is the sole true member of the genus Danio after a series of phylogenetic revisions reshuffled most of its former relatives into the genera Brachydanio, Devario, and Celestichthys. What sets it apart from its cousins is a combination of larger adult size, a nearly straight or only slightly notched tail in mature fish, and those notably elongated barbels that give rise to its common name. The body carries a predominantly striped pattern rather than spots, and populations from the Meghalaya region show more red in the fins than is typical elsewhere. Despite being reasonably common across its native range, this species turns up only occasionally in the hobby, and detailed captive care information is still fairly sparse. It is a peaceful fish but energetic enough to rattle slower or shyer tankmates, so pairing it with robust, similarly active species works best. Like all schooling danios, it genuinely benefits from a group of eight or more. Smaller numbers tend to produce skittish individuals and a less settled tank overall. Breeding has proven more challenging than with most danios and is probably best approached by experienced keepers willing to do some patient conditioning work.
