Found in the fast-flowing rivers of India's Western Ghats, Barilius malabaricus is a streamlined, active cyprinid native to the Payaswini and Vallapattanam river systems. It carries a distinctive color pattern of bluish-green markings arranged in one or two rows along the body, with the upper row forming a series of round to oval spots and the lower row, when present, appearing as a smaller cluster toward the front. The dorsal and anal fins are trimmed with broad orange margins, making identification fairly straightforward once you know what to look for. This species was frequently mixed up with close relatives in the trade prior to its revalidation in 2015, so older references may list it under different names. In the aquarium it is an energetic, fast-moving shoaler that needs a spacious tank with good flow and plenty of open water. It is not an ideal candidate for a typical community setup because its speed and competitive feeding style can overwhelm slower or more timid tankmates, and very small fish may be treated as food. Groups of five or more work best, as smaller numbers tend to lead to bullying within the group. Robust, similarly sized cyprinids and active bottom dwellers make the most compatible companions. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
