The orange-spotted sleeper-goby (Valenciennea puellaris) is one of the more personable sand-dwelling fish you can keep in a reef or fish-only setup. Dressed in a pale body dotted with rows of vivid orange spots along the flanks, it's a fish that rewards a patient eye. In the wild it ranges across a huge stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea east to Samoa and from southern Japan down to the Great Barrier Reef, where it occupies sandy flats in clear lagoons and along the seaward edges of reefs. What really sets this species apart is its natural lifestyle: pairs bond monogamously and share a burrow dug beneath rubble, a behavior they'll replicate in the aquarium if conditions allow. Watching a bonded pair work together is genuinely entertaining. They spend much of their time scooping up mouthfuls of sand, sifting out edible morsels, and expelling the clean substrate. A habit that keeps the sandbed well oxygenated and in good shape. They're quite timid, though, and will bolt for cover if something startles them, so a calm community of peaceful tankmates suits them best. A deep, fine sand bed is essentially non-negotiable for long-term success. Intermediate keepers who can meet that requirement will find this goby a rewarding, long-lived resident.
