The neon highfin barb (Oreichthys crenuchoides) is a small but visually distinctive cyprinid from India and Nepal, where it inhabits softwater streams and rivers. Males are immediately recognizable by a dramatically enlarged dorsal fin that stands tall relative to the fish's compact, deep-bodied frame, and a bold dark marking at the base of the tail gives the fish a sharp, defined look. Despite its beginner-friendly care rating, this species rewards anyone who takes the time to set up a well-thought-out tank. It is a shoaling fish rather than a true schooler, and within a group of eight or more, males will spar and establish a clear pecking order. Which is genuinely interesting to watch. That social complexity also means the tank needs plenty of plants and visual breaks so subdominant fish have somewhere to retreat. Keep it with small, gentle companions, think Boraras, Trigonostigma, pygmy Corydoras, or similar-sized, non-boisterous fish, because larger or pushier tankmates will stress it out and outcompete it at feeding time. One quirky detail: subordinate males sometimes suppress their dorsal-fin growth and take on a female-like appearance, a remarkable example of behavioral flexibility that you rarely see in fish this small.
