The Mozambique cichlid (Oreochromis mossambicus) is a fish with a reputation that precedes it. And not always for flattering reasons. Native to the lower Zambezi drainage and coastal river systems down to South Africa's Eastern Cape, it naturally gravitates toward slow or still water: muddy-bottomed lagoons, swamps, tidal creeks, and weedy ponds rather than open rivers or fast-flowing channels. In the wild it is a dietary opportunist, grazing algae and plant material as an adult while juveniles lean more heavily on invertebrates and zooplankton. Known informally as the 'Mossie', this species is routinely farmed on a massive scale and many of the fish encountered in the hobby are selectively bred color forms or hybrids, often pink or red, bearing little resemblance to the natural olive-green fish. The mouthbrooding behavior is genuinely interesting to observe. Females carry eggs and fry for around two weeks and even signal danger to free-swimming young by darkening patches of their face. That said, the Mozambique cichlid is a tough sell for most hobbyists: it grows large, produces enormous broods of fast-maturing fry that are difficult to rehome, and requires serious space. It is one of the most ecologically damaging invasive fish on the planet, so responsible ownership matters enormously here.
