Striped Catfish

The striped catfish (Pangasionodon hypophthalmus) is one of the most frequently misrepresented fish in the hobby. Young specimens are sold at just a couple of inches long, with a sleek, silvery-blue sheen that makes them genuinely appealing on the shelf. The problem is that almost nobody buying one at that size fully appreciates what they're signing up for. This species originates from large river systems in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya, where it undertakes seasonal migrations to spawn. In those rivers, adults reach several feet in length, and captive fish, while they rarely hit that maximum, can still grow to a few feet over a lifespan that may exceed twenty years. That is a serious long-term commitment by any measure. It is a schooling species and genuinely less skittish when kept in a group, but housing even a small group of adult fish demands a tank that most hobbyists simply don't have, or will never realistically obtain. Temperamentally it's not aggressive, though anything small enough to swallow will be, and its constant restless movement can stress quieter tankmates. Albino and so-called balloon forms exist in the trade, with the latter staying notably smaller. Despite the beginner care rating, this species belongs only with hobbyists who already have the space and commitment to house it for life.
