The panther puffer (Takifugu pardalis) is a chunky, charismatic fish from the coastal waters of the Northwest Pacific, ranging from Hakodate in northern Japan down through the East China and Yellow seas. In the wild it hugs rocky nearshore habitats, and that preference for structure is worth keeping in mind when setting up its home aquarium. The body is decorated with a scattered pattern of dark spots against a lighter background, giving it a somewhat leopard-like look that makes it easy to identify among the puffers commonly seen in the hobby. Like most of its relatives, this species grows into a sizeable animal and needs a genuinely large system to thrive long-term, so a spacious, well-filtered tank is non-negotiable. As a carnivore it will tackle hard-shelled prey with the fused beak-like teeth typical of puffers, and a varied diet that includes crunchy foods helps keep those teeth worn down properly. Despite its size and diet, the panther puffer is considered a workable choice even for less experienced saltwater keepers who can meet the space and feeding requirements. With good care these fish are long-lived, and many keepers find them surprisingly interactive and personable over time.
