The pearlscale angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii) is a compact dwarf angel with a quietly appealing look. A pale, pearly body that transitions into darker, dusky coloration toward the rear, giving it a subdued but distinctive two-tone appearance. Its range stretches across a wide sweep of the Western Pacific, from Bali and Christmas Island out to the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu, north to southern Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island. In the wild, it lives on lagoon and seaward reefs in coral-rich zones, browsing on algae and spending its days in the company of a single partner. This species is notably monogamous, pairing up without bothering to stake out and defend a strict territory. That relaxed social nature carries over into the aquarium, where it tends to be peaceful toward other species, making it one of the more manageable dwarf angels for hobbyists who are newer to marine fishkeeping. It does best with plenty of live rock to graze on, which mimics its natural feeding habits. One interesting footnote for fish nerds: this species hybridizes with both Centropyge eibli and C. flavissima where their ranges overlap, and juveniles of the surgeonfish Acanthurus pyroferus are known to mimic its appearance. A genuine case of flattery from an unrelated fish.
