Brummer's Moray

Brummer's moray (Pseudechidna brummeri) is a slender, pale-bodied eel that looks more like an animated length of white rope than a typical moray. Across its natural range in the Indo-Pacific, from the western Indian Ocean out to Samoa and north to the Ryukyu Islands, it haunts shallow reef flats and sandy lagoons, spending most of its time buried in sand or rubble with just its head poking out, waiting for something edible to wander close enough. That ambush-hunter patience carries straight into aquarium life. You'll often find it draped from a rock crevice, apparently motionless, until it gets hungry and starts threading through the tank looking for a meal. Despite its aggressive reputation toward its own kind and other ribbon-style eels, it generally ignores tankmates too large to swallow, and hobbyists report it fitting into reef systems without tearing things apart. That said, it should never be housed with other moray eels, particularly more assertive species that will outcompete it at feeding time. Escape behavior is a serious concern. This animal is remarkably serpentine and will find any gap in a lid or a water surface too close to the rim, so a tight, well-fitted cover is non-negotiable. For a moray, it's considered a relatively manageable species once its habitat needs are met.
