Asian Bumblebee Catfish

A small but feisty bottom-dweller from south-eastern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia, Pseudomystus sp. cf. stenomus is something of a taxonomic puzzle. Fish sold under this name in the hobby are almost certainly an undescribed species, since the true P. stenomus is native to Java and reportedly shows more prominent pale patterning. The genus Pseudomystus was historically lumped into Leiocassis, so older literature may still use that name. The most familiar member of the group is the Asian bumblebee catfish, P. siamensis, which can be told apart at a glance by its bold striped pattern. This species is a committed carnivore, and anything small enough to fit in its mouth is fair game, so choosing tankmates carefully matters. Medium to large cyprinids, characins, or peaceful cichlids that occupy the middle and upper water column are sensible companions. Toward other bottom-dwellers, particularly its own kind, it can be genuinely aggressive and territorial, so if you want to keep multiple individuals, the tank needs enough caves, driftwood, and broken sightlines to let each fish claim its own patch. Despite that territorial streak, it is otherwise a reasonably forgiving species and a manageable choice for a keeper with some community tank experience. Breeding has not been documented in captivity; in the wild, spawning appears to coincide with the start of the wet season.
