Purple Mbuna

The purple mbuna (Melanochromis vermivorus) is a compact cichlid from Lake Malawi, one of the great Rift Valley lakes of East Africa. What sets this species apart from most of its mbuna relatives is its tendency to form schools. A genuinely unusual trait in a group better known for territorial aggression and pair-based behavior. In the wild it moves through the rocky shoreline habitat that defines the mbuna world, browsing for food among the stones and open water above them. Like other members of the Melanochromis genus, males tend toward bold coloration while females and juveniles often show a different pattern, so a group will have some visual variety to it. That schooling instinct means you really do want to keep a decent number together rather than just a pair or trio, and a roomy tank is essential to give the group space to spread out and reduce friction. Despite the relatively small adult size, mbuna in general are feisty, and this species is no exception. Tankmates should be chosen with care and should be able to hold their own. It's a rewarding fish for an intermediate keeper who already has some cichlid experience and appreciates the lively, dynamic world of a Malawi setup.
