The Vateria Flower Rasbora (Rasboroides vaterifloris) is a small, peaceful schooling fish from a surprisingly narrow slice of the world. The Kalu basin of Sri Lanka, where it inhabits cool, shaded forest streams with silty bottoms and drifts of leaf litter. In the wild it picks off small insects and detritus, and that gentle, unhurried lifestyle carries over into captivity. What makes this species genuinely interesting is its color variation: depending on which river system a population originates from, adults may show red, orange, or yellow fins, and body tones can shift from warm reddish hues to a softer bluish cast. Males tend to be slimmer and more vividly colored than females, and their colors deepen noticeably when kept in a group with rival males around. Keeping at least six to ten individuals together is important. Smaller numbers leave the fish skittish and washed out. Because of its retiring personality, it does poorly with boisterous or larger tankmates, and works best alongside small cyprinids and peaceful loaches of similar scale. This species sits somewhere in the intermediate care range, partly due to its sensitivity during acclimation and its specific preference for quiet, well-maintained water. It is genuinely scarce in the trade, with export restrictions and tricky shipping making it a worthwhile find for the patient hobbyist.
