Red Garra

The red garra (Garra rufa) is a compact, bottom-dwelling cyprinid native to river systems across the Middle East and southern Turkey, where it turns up in everything from fast-flowing rivers to muddy seasonal ponds and even warm thermal springs. It feeds by scraping biofilm and organic material from hard surfaces using a specialized adhesive disc on its underside. A trait shared across its subfamily that lets these fish anchor to rocks in strong current. Coloration varies considerably between populations, but many individuals show a faint iridescent spot near the gill cover and another near the tail base, both more obvious in younger fish. This species is widely known outside the hobby as the so-called 'doctor fish' used in spa treatments, though there is genuine scientific debate about whether the fish sold commercially under that name actually represent a single species or a cluster of closely related ones. In the aquarium, red garras are reasonably easygoing with other species but can get territorial with their own kind in tighter quarters. Keeping a group of four or more tends to spread out any social tension and produces more natural behavior overall. They are a solid choice for a spacious community setup with robust, similarly-sized tankmates.
