Roseline Shark

A boldly patterned schooling fish from the fast-flowing hill streams of southwestern India, Sahyadria denisonii goes by a long list of trade names. Roseline shark, Denison's barb, Miss Kerala, and bleeding-eye barb among them. The color pattern is hard to mistake: a bright scarlet stripe runs from the snout to roughly mid-body, underlined by a wide black lateral band, with a yellow stripe sandwiched between the two toward the rear half of the fish. The caudal fin carries diagonal black and yellow bands that flash as the fish moves. In the wild this species occupies rocky, oxygen-rich pools bordered by heavy bankside vegetation, and it brings those active, restless habits straight into the aquarium. It is peaceful toward tankmates but genuinely needs the company of its own kind. Groups of six or more are the minimum, and larger groups tend to produce calmer, more confident behavior. Almost all fish in the hobby are commercially bred rather than wild-caught, which is worth knowing given that both this species and its close relative Sahyadria chalakkudiensis are listed as Endangered, with wild populations significantly reduced by overcollection and habitat degradation. Breeding in home aquaria is rare but documented. This is a rewarding species for intermediate keepers who can provide the space and flow these active swimmers genuinely need.
