The Sabah Dottyback (Manonichthys alleni) is a small, secretive fish from the coastal reefs of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. In the wild it keeps a low profile, tucking itself into cave openings, beneath reef ledges, and remarkably, inside tubular sponges of the species Callyspongia aerizusa. A habitat association that makes it stand out even among the notoriously reclusive dottybacks. It's a solitary animal by nature, rarely tolerating others of its own kind, and that shy, cryptic character carries over into the aquarium. To keep one happily, you'll want a reef tank with plenty of caves, overhangs, and nooks that mimic its natural sheltering spots. Given adequate cover it will eventually become more visible over time, venturing out to hunt, but don't expect it to be the centerpiece of a busy community display. At just over an inch to two inches fully grown, it's well suited to smaller reef setups. Diet is straightforward for a dottyback. Meaty foods and quality prepared options are both accepted. The intermediate care rating reflects its need for a stable, well-structured environment rather than any particular water chemistry difficulty. A rewarding fish for a patient keeper with a well-aquascaped tank.
