Leather Coral

Found on shallow Indo-Pacific reefs, Sarcophyton minusculum is a leather coral distributed across a remarkably broad stretch of ocean, from the African coast and the Red Sea all the way out to Hawaii. It typically lives at depths between about five and twelve meters, growing in the moderate light and flow conditions that characterize those reef zones. As a member of the Sarcophyton genus, it shares the characteristic leathery texture and mushroom-like cap form that the group is known for, though this particular species sits on the smaller end of the size spectrum compared to some of its relatives. In the aquarium, it tends to be a forgiving choice for newer reef keepers, tolerating the kinds of water quality fluctuations that would stress more delicate corals. Like other leather corals, it may periodically coat itself in a waxy layer and appear closed for several days before shedding it and reopening, which is completely normal behavior and not a cause for alarm. Moderate lighting and a steady but not aggressive water movement seem to suit it well, mirroring the conditions of its natural reef habitat. It is considered reef safe and generally coexists peacefully with other inhabitants.
