Banded Mountain Loach

The banded mountain loach (Schistura notostigma) is a small but characterful fish found only in Sri Lanka, making it something of a rarity among loaches in the hobby. In the wild, it occupies fast-moving, well-oxygenated streams with rocky and pebbly bottoms, and it's genuinely adapted to powerful currents. This is a fish capable of ascending steep inclines and pushing into high-elevation mountain waterways where conditions are brisk and the water is clean. In the aquarium, that wild background translates directly into care requirements: it wants strong flow, good oxygenation, and a substrate of smooth stones or pebbles that mimics its natural hunting ground. It spends most of its time browsing close to the bottom, picking through gaps between rocks in search of food, so a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots suits it well. Like many loaches in the Schistura genus, it can be territorial and scrappy toward its own kind or similarly shaped tankmates, so it's worth keeping that in mind when planning a community. It's best suited to a keeper with some experience who can maintain the water quality and flow this fish genuinely needs to thrive.
