Spotted Hawkfish

The pixy hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) is one of those fish that immediately catches your eye not because it's moving, but because it isn't. Like all hawkfish, it spends most of its time perched motionlessly on coral heads, using its thickened lower pectoral rays as makeshift legs to grip the structure beneath it. The body is white to pale pink, densely freckled with red-orange spots, and the pointed snout gives it a slightly alert, inquisitive look that suits its sit-and-wait hunting style perfectly. In the wild this fish is found across a huge swath of the Indo-Pacific and into the eastern Pacific, from the Red Sea all the way to the Gulf of California, typically in clear-water reef environments with good coral coverage, anywhere from just below the surface surge down to around 40 meters. It feeds on small crustaceans and fish that wander too close, which means shrimp and small tankmates are genuinely at risk. Males are territorial and keep harems in the wild, so housing two males together is asking for trouble. That said, for a single-specimen reef setup or a fish-only tank, this is a manageable, personable fish that even newer marine keepers can do well with.
