The Shubunkin Goldfish (Carassius auratus var. shubunkin) is one of the most colorful single-tailed goldfish you can keep, splashed with a mosaic of red, orange, yellow, black, and white over a blue or violet base. A patterning style known as calico. Like all goldfish, it traces its ancestry back to selectively bred carp from East Asia, and it has no natural wild population; every Shubunkin alive today exists because of centuries of human cultivation. There are a couple of recognized body forms, the most common being the London Shubunkin with a rounded shape close to a common goldfish, and the slimmer, more elongated Bristol type with a notably large, flowing tail. Temperament is about as easygoing as it gets. Shubunkins coexist peacefully with other similarly sized goldfish and are a genuinely forgiving choice for newer fishkeepers willing to do the homework on proper filtration. These are big, active fish that generate a significant waste load, so adequate space and a good filter are non-negotiable. With proper care, a Shubunkin can easily live fifteen years or more, which makes it a real long-term commitment rather than a casual purchase. They thrive equally well in a spacious outdoor pond or a well-maintained large aquarium.
