The Malawi Squeaker (Synodontis njassae) holds a unique distinction as the sole representative of its genus in Lake Malawi, a rift lake known for its hard, alkaline water and spectacular cichlid diversity. In the wild it spends daylight hours tucked among rocks and boulders, becoming more active after dark when it forages for insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. That nocturnal rhythm carries straight into the aquarium, where you can expect it to disappear into caves during the day and emerge to explore once the lights go out. Two colour forms exist, a large-spotted and a small-spotted morph, and both turn up in the hobby with reasonable regularity. Despite a heavily armoured skull and serrated spines on its pectoral and dorsal fins, this catfish is generally peaceful toward tankmates of comparable size, and it pairs naturally with robust Lake Malawi cichlids. It does show some territorial instincts and can become assertive if crowded or harassed, so tank layout matters. It will also squabble with other Synodontis species, so mixing them is not recommended. Because it grows to a solid size and appreciates space to establish its own territory among rockwork, it suits intermediate keepers who can provide an appropriately furnished setup. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
