Found in Brazilian freshwaters, Aspidoras taurus is one of those small armored catfish that quietly earns its place in a well-planned community tank. It belongs to a genus closely related to Corydoras, and like its more famous cousins it is peaceful, gregarious, and genuinely unhappy when kept alone. A group of at least four to six individuals is really the minimum to see natural behavior. One biologically interesting trait is its ability to breathe air facultatively, meaning it can gulp atmospheric oxygen at the surface when dissolved oxygen in the water runs low. In terms of identification, this species is tricky in the trade because it frequently shows up mislabeled as Aspidoras menezesi. The key differences are structural: the infraorbitals, preopercle, and nuchal plate in A. taurus are all covered by thick skin and invisible externally, whereas those features are visible through thin skin in related species, including A. menezesi. It also lacks a lateral line behind a couple of small ossicles. For everyday aquarium purposes though, just know you have a small, undemanding, sociable bottom-dweller that accepts a wide range of conditions and is a sensible choice for anyone newer to keeping catfish.
