The tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes) is probably best known outside the hobby as the source of fugu, the famously dangerous Japanese delicacy where a single miscut can be fatal. That reputation alone tells you something about this animal. In the wild it ranges across the northwest Pacific, spending adult life in coastal inlet waters and occasionally pushing into brackish zones, while younger fish are commonly found around river mouths before moving offshore as they grow. Spawning happens in spring, with eggs anchored to rocky substrate in relatively shallow coastal areas. The toxicity is real and worth understanding: the liver and ovaries are extremely dangerous, and the intestines carry some level of toxin as well, though the flesh and skin are considered safe. None of this matters directly for keeping one in a home aquarium, but it speaks to the species' biology. As a display animal, this is a large, intelligent, personable fish that will absolutely learn to recognize its keeper. The sheer size means the tank footprint is substantial, and the carnivorous diet calls for meaty, crunchy foods to keep the beak-like teeth worn down. Despite all this, it is generally rated as manageable for a committed keeper willing to meet its space and dietary needs.
