Found naturally only in Lake Kyoga in Uganda, Haplochromis latifasciatus is a Victorian-region cichlid with a conservation story worth knowing: it is critically endangered in the wild, yet the hobby population is relatively stable thanks to how freely it breeds in captivity. You may also see it sold under the invalid name Astatotilapia latifasciata or as Haplochromis sp. "zebra obliquidens". Worth knowing before you shop. An albino form exists, though the wild-type coloration is generally considered the more attractive of the two. Behaviorally, this species sits on the aggressive side of the scale, but it is somewhat more manageable than many of its Victorian relatives. It can work in a mixed cichlid setup with similarly sized Mbuna, Aulonocara, or Neolamprologus, provided you avoid housing it alongside other Victorian haplochromines due to hybridization risk. Males are persistent when pursuing females, so running a group with multiple females per male is the sensible approach. When spawning season kicks in, territorial behavior ramps up noticeably. Like its relatives, it is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female incubates eggs in her mouth for roughly three weeks and continues guarding fry after release. Intermediate-level experience is recommended, particularly around managing aggression and supporting breeding attempts successfully.
