Fused Staghorn

Fused staghorn coral (Acropora prolifera) holds a genuinely unusual place in the reef world. It is the product of natural hybridization between two other Caribbean Acropora species, making it the sole representative of its genus endemic to the Western Atlantic. Colonies grow in a branching form where the main arms send out compact sub-branches near their tips, giving the whole structure a dense, layered look. Coloration is generally tan to pale brown, with white tips on the growing branches. In the wild, this coral occupies very shallow water along reef slopes and lagoon margins, often in the surf zone where light is intense and water movement is constant. Those conditions tell you a lot about what it needs in captivity: very high lighting and strong, consistent flow are not optional. Even among experienced reefers, Acropora corals have a reputation for demanding stable, pristine water conditions, and fused staghorn is no exception. It is not a coral for anyone still getting their system dialed in. For those with a mature, well-maintained reef and the patience to meet its needs, though, it represents a genuinely rare piece of Atlantic reef natural history in a hobby dominated by Indo-Pacific Acropora.
