Adolf's catfish (Corydoras adolfoi) is a small armored catfish from the blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, and it carries one of the more distinctive color schemes in the genus. A pale body set off by a bold diagonal dark bar across the dorsal surface and a warm orange-to-amber patch on the nape. It belongs to an informal group of Rio Negro corydoras that share this basic pattern, and the species most likely to cause identification headaches is Corydoras duplicareus. The two look nearly identical at a glance; the dark bar on adolfoi tends to be somewhat narrower and the nape patch a bit softer in tone, though neither character is fully reliable. The pectoral-fin spine is the definitive tell, but good luck examining that in a tank. Like all corydoras, Adolf's catfish wears bony plates rather than scales, and its modified intestine lets it gulp atmospheric oxygen at the surface. Perfectly normal behavior, not a distress signal. The pectoral spines deserve respect; they can pierce skin and may carry mild venomous secretions, so net carefully. Keep them in groups of six or more and they'll be far more active and visible. Breeding is achievable but fry are somewhat demanding to raise, making this one a rewarding project for keepers with some experience under their belt.
