Found in the stream systems of the Aguaytía and Pachitea river drainages in Peru, Aequidens patricki is a moderately sized cichlid that seldom makes it into the hobby. When it does appear, it tends to generate real excitement among cichlid enthusiasts. Like many members of its genus, this fish occupies a middle ground in terms of size, reaching somewhere between a small and medium cichlid depending on conditions and sex. Do not let the compact build fool you. This species carries a notably aggressive temperament, and tankmate selection deserves careful thought. Robust, similarly sized fish that can hold their own are the safest companions, and a well-structured aquarium with plenty of broken lines of sight will help reduce territorial friction. Given its restricted natural range and infrequent availability, most specimens reaching the hobby have been wild-caught, so acclimating them thoughtfully to aquarium life matters. The soft, acidic water of its native Peruvian streams should be kept in mind when setting up the tank. This is not a beginner species. Someone comfortable managing cichlid aggression and replicating South American water conditions will get the most out of keeping it. A rewarding fish for the patient, experienced keeper who manages to track one down.
