The Acara cichlid (Aequidens rondoni) is a relatively small but feisty cichlid native to the upper Tapajós River basin in Brazil, a tributary system within the broader Amazon drainage. Like many cichlids from that region, it sports the classic oval-bodied profile with iridescent scaling and subtle patterning typical of the Aequidens group. Understated compared to some of its showier relatives, but with a quiet attractiveness that grows on you the longer you keep it. What this fish lacks in size it makes up for in attitude. Despite being on the smaller end for a cichlid, it carries an aggressive temperament that you need to plan around when stocking a tank. Tankmates should be chosen carefully. Other robust fish of similar or larger size tend to work better than anything small or timid. That said, its care level is considered beginner-friendly, which makes it a reasonable entry point into the cichlid hobby as long as you respect its territorial nature. With good care, these fish can live up to 12 years, so this is a long-term commitment rather than a casual addition. A 40-gallon tank gives a single specimen or a pair enough territory to settle in without constant conflict.
