Leaf coral (Agaricia agaricites) is a Caribbean native with a growth habit that sets it apart from the typical dome or branching corals most reef keepers start with. Colonies spread as encrusting sheets, broad horizontal plates, or irregular upright fronds that can fold and divide into complex, layered formations. The corallites themselves sit in deep, concentric valleys along the plate surfaces, giving the coral a ridged, almost topographic texture. Coloration runs toward the understated side, tans, warm browns, and yellow-browns are typical, though some specimens carry a purplish cast, which explains the alternate name purple lettuce coral. In the wild this species ranges through the Western Atlantic from the Caribbean down to eastern Brazil, turning up across a wide depth range from the shallows all the way down to 75 meters, often in reef zones where light is reduced. That natural preference for dimmer conditions translates well to the aquarium, where leaf coral is genuinely tolerant of lower lighting and gentle flow. A relatively forgiving choice for reef keepers who are still dialing in their systems. It's not a flashy coral, but its sculptural growth form and adaptability make it a worthwhile addition to a Western Atlantic-themed tank or any low-energy reef setup.
