Found in the deeper reaches of Lake Malawi, Alticorpus mentale is a cichlid that spends most of its life well below 60 meters, rooting around sandy and muddy lake-floor substrates in the southern basin. That preference for depth makes it an unusual find in the aquarium trade. Most Malawi cichlids that hobbyists encounter come from the shallower rocky shoreline zones, so this one occupies a genuinely different ecological niche. In the wild it is distributed fairly evenly across those deeper sediment beds, suggesting it's a deliberate and active forager rather than a species tied to specific shelter points. As a carnivore, it needs a protein-rich diet in captivity, and its intermediate care rating reflects the commitment that Malawi cichlids generally demand. Stable, hard, alkaline water is non-negotiable. A moderately sized tank with open sandy bottom areas would suit it well, giving it space to express natural foraging behavior. Because it comes from calm, deep water rather than the turbulent shallows, keeping it with boisterous or aggressive tankmates is worth thinking through carefully. This is a species that rewards keepers who have some Malawi experience already and are looking to branch out from the usual mbuna crowd.
