The Arabian Toothcarp (Aphanius dispar) is a small, endlessly active fish from the coastal zones and inland oasis pools of the Red Sea and Mediterranean regions, where it tolerates an exceptional range of salinities. From hypersaline lagoons to nearly fresh water. Males develop more intense patterning when dominant and defending temporary territories, making group dynamics genuinely interesting to observe. Despite what the care level tag might suggest, this species comes with real demands: its specific water chemistry requirements make it a poor fit for a general community tank, and most keepers are advised to maintain it as a species-only group, ideally with two or three females per male. It is rarely sold in shops and is more likely to turn up through specialist breeders or killifish associations. Breeding is achievable with a well-arranged setup. Unlike many relatives, this fish tends to deposit eggs directly into the substrate rather than into plant material, and adults will readily eat their own eggs if given the chance, so daily checks during the spawning season are essential. The genus Aphanius as a whole is in a precarious conservation position, with most species facing serious habitat pressure from human activity. Taking on this fish means committing to its long-term care and, ideally, contributing to captive breeding efforts for a group that genuinely needs the help.
