The Blackedged Blaasop (Arothron immaculatus) is a mid-sized pufferfish found across a broad sweep of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea and the southern coast of Africa all the way east to Indonesia and north to southern Japan. In the wild it tends to favor shallow, sheltered environments. Seagrass beds, mangrove edges, and muddy estuarine flats, typically in just a meter or two of water, though it also turns up in trawl catches over silty bottoms at greater depths. It's a solitary animal by nature, and that independence carries over into captivity. This is not a community-tank fish. Its semi-aggressive disposition means it will hassle tankmates, and like most puffers it has the teeth and the inclination to cause real damage to slow-moving or long-finned fish. A carnivore, it needs a varied diet of meaty foods, and regular feeding on hard-shelled prey helps keep its ever-growing teeth worn down. The species is best suited to a large, dedicated puffer setup or a fish-only system with robust, similarly sized tankmates. Intermediate-level experience is a reasonable baseline. Not because the fish is fragile, but because managing its behavior and meeting its space requirements takes some planning.
