About

The assassin snail (Clea helena) is one of those rare invertebrates that earns its keep in a very practical way. If you've ever had a tank overrun with Malaysian trumpet snails or bladder snails, you already know why this species has become so popular. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly rivers and lakes in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it lives in soft substrate where it can partially burrow while waiting for prey. The bold yellow and brown banded shell, which is where the bumblebee nickname comes from, makes it one of the more visually interesting snails available in the hobby. Behavior-wise, assassin snails are slow and methodical hunters. They track down smaller snails using chemosensory cues, then engulf them. They won't bother healthy fish or shrimp large enough to defend themselves, though very small dwarf shrimp and shrimplets can occasionally be at risk. They reproduce slowly compared to pest snails, laying small clutches of eggs, so population explosions aren't a concern the way they are with other species. They're genuinely beginner-friendly, tolerant of a range of water conditions, and require no special feeding if there's a snail population to work through. Though meaty foods like bloodworm or snail flesh can supplement their diet.
