The Moustache Catfish (Auchenipterus nuchalis) is one of those species that rewards a closer look. What seems like a plain, streamlined catfish turns out to have some genuinely unusual biology once you understand it. Native to the lower Amazon and Tocantins river systems, with populations ranging north through the Marowijne drainage, this species favors the main channels of large rivers rather than shallow floodplains, tending to show up in eroded bank zones where currents have shaped the habitat. In the wild it is a commercially significant fish, taken in large numbers by net fishers especially during the rainy season when it reproduces. It swims freely near the surface rather than hugging the bottom like many of its relatives, which surprises people expecting typical catfish behavior. Activity peaks at dusk, dawn, and through the night, so daytime observers often see little. Males are identifiable by their noticeably thickened, hardened maxillary barbels, the "moustache" the common name references, and by fused anal fin rays that form part of a reproductive structure. In the aquarium it is a capable predator of smaller tankmates, so fish selection matters. An intermediate-level keeper with a roomy setup and appropriately sized companions should find it manageable.
