The banded rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata) is a standout from the rivers and seasonal waterholes of northern Australia, where it navigates everything from clear rocky streams to partly stagnant dry-season pools thick with leaf litter. It's a fish that rewards patient keepers. Juveniles sold at fish stores look fairly plain, and it can take well over a year on a varied diet before males develop their full, vivid coloration. Worth the wait, though. One thing to be aware of: this species shows remarkable variation across its range, with distinct local color morphs that hybridize readily, so mixing fish from different collection localities is generally a bad idea. Keep the same form together. In a community setting, the banded rainbowfish is peaceful by nature, though its active swimming style and decent adult size can unsettle smaller or slower tankmates. Pair it with similarly energetic fish. Other rainbowfish, characins, danios, or robust catfish like Corydoras work well. It's a schooling species and genuinely does better in a group. Breeding is achievable for intermediate keepers, as the fish scatter adhesive eggs through fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, though raising the tiny fry requires some attention and appropriately small first foods.
