The black-spotted Corydoras (Corydoras melanistius) is a small, bottom-dwelling catfish native to the coastal river systems of the Guianas in northeastern South America. Like all members of this enormous genus, it wears two rows of bony plates along its flanks rather than ordinary scales, giving it that characteristic armored look. The black spotting pattern across the body and a dark band through the dorsal fin help distinguish it from similar species, though if you're ever unsure, counting the dorsal fin rays is a reliable trick. This species typically has 12 to 13, compared to the 7 found in the closely related Corydoras delphax. In the aquarium this is an easy-going fish that gets along with virtually any non-aggressive tankmate of appropriate size. Small characins, cyprinids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish all work well. What really brings these fish to life is keeping them in a proper group of at least six individuals; in smaller numbers they tend to be shy and inactive. You'll notice them making occasional quick dashes to the water surface to gulp air, which is completely normal. All Corydoras can breathe atmospheric oxygen through a modified section of intestine, an adaptation for surviving oxygen-poor conditions in the wild. One thing worth knowing: these little fish can live 15 years or more, so they're a genuine long-term commitment.
