The bluebanded angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is instantly recognizable. Bold vertical white and orange bands run the length of its body, contrasting with a blue-edged dorsal fin and a yellow tail that brightens as the fish matures. It ranges across a vast stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way out to the Tuamoto Islands, where it inhabits sponge- and coral-rich walls, lagoons, and seaward reefs. In the wild you'll typically find them hovering near caves or overhangs, picking at sponges and tunicates. A diet that's notoriously hard to replicate in captivity and is the main reason this species struggles in aquariums despite its long potential lifespan. Wild-caught individuals often arrive reluctant to accept prepared or frozen foods, so patience and a varied offering are essential from day one. Despite being listed as aggressive, this fish is actually more likely to be the victim than the bully. Boisterous tankmates like tangs or other angelfish can easily stress it out. The advice that consistently works is to add the bluebanded angelfish before your more assertive residents are established. It's a large, active fish that needs plenty of space and a well-structured reef environment to feel secure.
