The lyretail angelfish (Genicanthus caudovittatus) is one of those species that stops you in your tracks the moment you see it. The elongated, swept-back lobes of the caudal fin give it a genuinely graceful silhouette that sets it apart from most other marine angels. Like others in the Genicanthus genus, this species shows clear sexual dimorphism. Males and females look noticeably different from each other, which adds an extra layer of interest when you keep a small group. In the wild, a single male typically patrols a harem of females along steep reef slopes and drop-offs across the western Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea down through the Maldives, Madagascar, and as far south as Natal. Wild fish rise several meters off the bottom to pick at zooplankton drifting in the water column, which explains why they adapt well to prepared and frozen foods in captivity. Temperament-wise, this is one of the more community-friendly angels you can keep. Genuinely peaceful compared to many of its relatives. That said, the intermediate care rating is real, partly because these fish come from deeper reef environments and need stable, well-maintained water and a system large enough to give them room to move and graze comfortably.
