The Brown Hogfish (Bodianus eclancheri) is a large, assertive wrasse native to the cool, upwelling-driven waters of the Southeast Pacific, ranging from Ecuador down through central Chile and notably around the Galápagos Islands. Despite the plain-sounding common name, this species goes by Galápagos hogfish and harlequin wrasse as well, and its vivid patterning reflects what researchers suspect are selective pressures unique to that isolated island environment. Like other hogfish, it is a sequential hermaphrodite, beginning life female and transitioning to male over time. A reproductive strategy common across the wrasse family. Adults are opportunistic foragers, working over the substrate in search of a broad mix of invertebrates and algae, which means anything small enough to be considered food in your tank probably will be. That appetite and its potential to reach nearly two feet long make this a species that demands serious space and a carefully considered tankmate list. It is not a fish for a casual setup. A very large system and some experience with aggressive, active wrasses will serve you well here. For the right keeper with the right tank, though, this is a genuinely interesting and characterful fish from one of the world's most iconic marine environments.
